I have aosu solarcam wireless security camera setup and a tenda nova mw3 wifi mesh. but the cameras all connect only to the primary node and not the secondary nodes. Any reasons ?
Hello,
Regarding your setup with Aosu Solar Wireless Security Cameras and the Tenda Nova MW3 mesh Wi-Fi system, it’s common for IoT devices like security cameras to connect only to the primary mesh node rather than secondary nodes.
Important Note About Aosu Cameras:
Most Aosu cameras are designed to connect to only one Wi-Fi network at a time. Once connected, they do not automatically switch between mesh nodes or different Wi-Fi access points. To connect a camera to another node or network, the camera must be reset and set up again with the new connection.
Why This Happens on Mesh Networks:
- Mesh Wi-Fi systems have multiple nodes broadcasting the same SSID, but the camera treats the entire network as one. It sticks to the initial node it connected to and won’t roam or switch nodes on its own.
- If the camera’s Wi-Fi signal to the primary node becomes weak, it may keep trying to reconnect there, causing potential connectivity issues.
What You Can Do:
- Place cameras near the strongest mesh node to ensure a reliable connection, ideally the primary node if the camera can’t switch nodes automatically.
- If you want to connect a camera to a different node, you’ll need to reset the camera and perform the Wi-Fi setup again near that node.
- Consider optimizing your mesh node placement to cover your camera areas evenly, or use Ethernet backhaul to improve network stability.
My personal advice would be investing into a WI-FI extender if the cameras are far from the primary node and roaming isnt working.
All the best,
