I have the stationary battery-operated cameras. How far away does someone have to be from camera for camera to start recording the event? I’m having trouble with cameras not recoding events. I have the sensitivity set at maximum and yet, someone has to be directly in front of the camera, and only a few feet away, for it to start recording.
Unfortunately other users have reported this same issue.
An alternative will be to record continuous but that will drain your battery. I think the sensor only triggers when the object is a few feet away.
But I could be wrong.
Thanks for reaching out — this is a common concern, and I’ll help you troubleshoot it step by step.
Typical Motion Detection Range
For Aosu battery-operated cameras, the motion detection is based on PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors, which detect body heat and movement. These have limited range and angle by design, especially to preserve battery life.
-
Detection range: Usually around 20–26 feet (6–8 meters) under ideal conditions.
-
Detection angle: Narrower than the camera’s field of view — around 120° or less.
-
Effective range also depends heavily on:
-
Motion direction (side-to-side is better than direct approach)
-
Ambient temperature (PIR performs worse in hot weather)
-
Obstructions (glass, walls, bushes reduce detection)
-
Mounting height and tilt angle
-
What You Can Try
1. Adjust Mounting Height & Angle
-
Recommended height: ~6.5 feet (2 meters)
-
Tilt: Angle slightly downward to cover the expected motion path.
-
Make sure it’s not tilted too steeply, or detection range shrinks dramatically.
2. Change Motion Detection Mode
-
In the Aosu app, check if you’re using “Human Detection” or “All Motion”.
-
Try switching to All Motion (may consume more battery) to catch earlier movement.
3. Test with Different Approach Angles
- Walk side-to-side in front of the camera instead of straight toward it. PIR sensors trigger more reliably with lateral movement.
4. Clean the Sensor Area
- Wipe the lens and PIR sensor — dust or spiderwebs can reduce accuracy.
5. Firmware Check
- Ensure the camera is updated to the latest firmware via the Aosu app.
If All Else Fails
If you’re still getting delayed or missed recordings even after optimizing, this could point to:
-
A hardware issue with the PIR sensor
-
Interference from environmental heat sources
-
A firmware bug (contact Aosu support with logs)
Hi. I have exactly the same problem. If you come across a solution, please post it on here or pm me (if that’s possible on this platform). Many thanks.
Thank you for this information. I will try these steps immediately.
