[Round 30 | aosu Security Quiz] ❄️ Is the Cold Killing Your Battery? Find Out Why!

Round 30 , “ :snowflake: Is the Cold Killing Your Battery? Find Out Why!:battery:

:bullseye: Q: Why is my battery draining fast?

Picture this: You set up your aosu camera, feeling 100% secure. :shield: But a few weeks later, you notice the battery percentage is dropping much faster than expected… :chart_decreasing:

The weather has been freezing lately :snowflake:, and the street in front of my house has been busier than usual with holiday deliveries. :delivery_truck::package: I haven’t changed any settings, yet my ‘silent guardian’ seems to be exhausted.

Has anyone else noticed their battery ‘running fast’ lately? :man_running::dashing_away: What’s actually happening behind the lens?:thought_balloon:

:magnifying_glass_tilted_left: You can find the answer in the aosu Community.

:battery: Why the aosu battery drains faster in cold weather?

Cold temperatures make batteries work less efficiently. When it’s freezing, the battery can’t hold power as well, so the percentage drops quicker than normal.

At the same time, if your street is busier with deliveries, the camera is turning on more often to record motion. Every time it wakes up, records, or sends a notification, it uses extra power.

So the fast drain usually comes from two things happening together:

  • Cold weather = weaker battery performance
  • More motion = more recordings and higher power use

Once the temperature rises and activity slows down, the battery life normally goes back to what you’re used to.

You copied and pasted last week’s question. :scream:

But in regards to cold weather, Aosu provides some symptoms of a battery struggling due to low temps:

Lithium batteries naturally experience reduced performance in low temperatures due to slower chemical reactions. You may notice:

  1. The battery may not charge or drains quickly (e.g., 100% to 80% rapidly).
  2. Battery levels may drop temporarily but recover as temperatures rise.
  3. Charging may seem ineffective even in bright sunlight.

Here are some recommendations:

Tips for Winter Usage

  1. Indoor Charging: Install the camera in an accessible spot for easy removal and wired charging indoors.
  2. Lower Sensitivity: Adjust detection settings to reduce unnecessary recordings and save power.
  3. Solar Panel Check: Ensure the solar panel is connected and unobstructed for better charging.
  4. Battery Check: Test battery health by placing the device indoors at room temperature for two hours, then charge. If it reaches 100%, the battery is fine.

I’ve had to take down one of my cameras to charge in-doors twice this season. Fingers crossed it’s the last time.

Since Aosu wireless and solar camera use lithium batteries and lithium batteries naturally experience reduced performance in low temperatures due to slower chemical reactions.

Cold temperatures significantly slow down the chemical reactions stored within the battery needed to produce power.

In the solar-powered camera kit, the battery life after one charging is several months in normal use, but it may be affected by various environmental factors at your home, such as local weather, number of passers-by, vehicles and other passing objects, as well as number of events detected and recorded.

Some factors that may lead to frequent charging are detailed below:

  • Local weather

The charging efficiency of lithium ion batteries is very low at a temperature below 40°F / 4°C. Therefore, the lithium ion battery used by the solar-powered camera needs more frequent charging when the temperature is lower than 40°F/ 4°C .

The battery performance will return to normal once the weather warms and remains above the ice point.

Cold weather reduces battery efficiency, so the battery drains faster in freezing temperatures. At the same time, more movement from holiday deliveries means the camera is triggering and recording more often, which uses extra power. Even without changing settings, cold conditions and increased activity together can cause the battery to drop much faster than normal.

I’m so excited for winning this. Thank you Aosu for the recognition and the luck :two_hearts:
